7 Ways to Treat Your Skin

I don’t know about you but my skin needs a break! She’s constantly having to put up with my random face picking, my pimple popping escapades, not to mention all the oily foods I gorge myself on.

That’s why I like to treat her to a Special Day every so often, to say sorry (and also to bribe her into leaving me blemish free once in awhile, shhhh).

Anyways here’s a couple of tips or ya!

1. SCRUB – A – DUB – DUB!

Start your skin treat day off with a thorough exfoliation, only a Higher Power truly knows how much dead skin is just sitting (not paying rent, might I add) on my face!

Exfoliating uncovers and unlocks that smooth and supple skin thats been waiting to see the light of day.

2. SOFTEN UP YOUR PORES FOR A DEEPER CLEANSE

My number one tip for thorough cleansing is to soften up your pores.

I find that if I soften my pores then follow up with a clay mask thereafter – making sure to rinse it off before it dries, so that it doesn’t dry out my skin – leaves my skin looking and feeling cleansed and brightened.

Try a steamer or DIY it at home with warm water in a bowl.

3. GIVE YOURSELF A FACIAL

These pocket sized gems are amazing for revitalizing and restoring your skin while being convenient, and not to mention easy on your bank account.

Use one that is suited for your specific needs, that way it’s more effective than just slapping a wet sheet on your face.

  • Benzonite/Clay Mask: Detoxifies the skin,  and clears up large pores, minimising them as well.
  • Sheet Masks: Restores nutrients to the skin, and they’re ultra moisturizing.
  • Peel off Masks: Cleanses the skin, especially dead skin on the surface, gets rid of unwanted oils too.

4. TAKE CARE OF YOUR UNDER EYES

Look, the bags underneath my eyes could be sold in any Hermes store, worldwide. Their worth their weight in gold.

These bags however need to be rehydrated, look for eye patches that are high in vitamin C and E for their brightening properties.

Cucumbers can do wonders as well. Extract the juice of a cucumber, plop a cotton pad into the juice and freeze them. Use them by placing them on those pesky bags to de-puff in the morning or during your skin treat day.

5. DON’T NEGLECT THE REST OF YOUR BODY

Dead skin is everywhere. It’s in your car, your bed, even your exes home. Yup it’s probably still there.

So make sure to give the rest of your skin some love too! Exfoliate in the shower before you shave (if you shave) for extra smooth skin and zero bumps.

Don’t forget about your chest!

6. BATH BABES!

This here is no ordinary bath, it’s not your run-of-the-mill drop a bath bomb and you’re good to go.

Nah, I’m talking essential oils, rose petals, a bath caddy topped with things that should never touch water! Life is about taking risks and aesthetically pleasing bath tubs!

Note: a regular bath bomb or just water in your tub is just as great, as long as you’re relaxed. This is your me time after all.

7. MOISTURIZE YOUR SKIN, GIRL!

If you’re anything like myself then your skin is as dry as your notifications (hang in there).

Anyway, you’ve pampered and spoiled your lovely skin now it’s time to lock it all in. Pick a moisturizer that’s oil-based, this helps your skin to store moisture. But don’t use oil-based moisturizers on your face, that clogs your pores.

Tricky I know.

Use an overnight serum before bed, it’s the easiest way to get results while putting in minimal effort.

And lastly drink your water! I’m not even going to get into it, you already know her and her magical powers.

I hope these tips have you and your skin in total bliss!

4 Quick & Easy Ways to Preserve Curly Hair

Ugh! The struggle of maintaining curls, one word; Scandalous! The amount of time spent on a wash day only for it to lose its way on day two; Scandalous! Spending way too much money on products that don’t work – say it with me; Scandalous!

Hmm, if only there were certain styles and methods to keep our coils looking good…

Luckily there are! And I’ve compiled a quick guide to keeping you and your curls ‘tress free! (Get it? Stress free. I kid, I kid.)

1. PICK THE RIGHT PRESERVATION METHOD

To make this work you gotta know whether you’re a 2a, 3b or 4c gal (there are many more types) and what type of curl you’re after.

  • Fine hair looks great with soft, wavy curls. Try a simple braid out, perhaps a French braid, Dutch braid or 3 strand plait.
  • Coily, spiral curls can be super cute with an easy pineapple. It’ll lock in volume at the root while preserving the curl at the tips.
  • Kinky hair that’s on the thicker side of life, that always seems to shrink up on you can be saved with Bantu knots. These will elongate the curls. Beware; these can be a nightmare to sleep on. Try to section wisely leaving a spot to comfortably lie on.

2. CHOOSE THE PRODUCTS THAT WORK BEST FOR YOU

A product that suits you and your hair needs can go a long way in helping you manage and maintain your curls, I’d recommend these babies:

  • As I Am Coil Defining Jelly

Love using this product in wash ‘n go routines, since hair needs to be wet when being used.

Be sure to only use a small amount of product while working it through your hair, try and be real thorough with this.

Do your best not to mess around and fuss about with the hair in its wet state as this can make it frizzy and lose some of its curl definition.

  • Cantu Shea Butter Coconut Curling Cream

Perfect for lightweight styling, like twists or braid outs. It’s also free of mineral oils, parabens and sulphate, YAY for healthy hair!

This product not only holds the curls for a good amount of time but one container can last for months at a time.

And its sweet coconuty scent is an added bonus.

  • Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie

Designed for wavy curls but can work well on 4c kinky curls as well. Works absolute wonders on transitioning hair as it nourishes damaged hair and restores oils back into the hair.

3. SLEEP WITH YOUR HAIR IN MIND

Unfortunately the way we sleep has a huge hand in deciding what our hair looks like in the morning.

So make it a priority to invest in a satin bonnet or silk pillowcase instead of cotton. The bonnet and pillowcase can actually leave your hair frizz free, with fewer breakage and no more pesky tangles in the morning. Thank you baby Jesus! Whilst cotton absorbs moisture, leaving your hair dry and dull.

Pro tip: having your hair in a curl preserving style makes sleeping with curls soo much easier. No more mini freakouts in the morning for us!

4. MOISTURIZE, MOISTURIZE, MOIST – UR – RIZE !

Moisturize your curls by mixing equal parts water and conditioner together. Spritz the mixture on your curls whenever they begin to look a little dry and frizzy. (P.S rose water works well too and smells delicious)

Oils can be used as well, but in moderation, as too much oil can lead to nasty dandruff and hair breakage not to mention it can leave your hair feeling greasy and heavy if done incorrectly. Try coconut oil or argan oil.

Another quick refresher is picking out frizzy pieces and dealing with them individually. Either with some product or water on your finger tips, simply pick a piece and twirl it between your two fingers to curl them right back up.

I hope these quick and easy tips work for you! Let me know if you have any tips of your own!

9 Tips to Take Your Makeup Skills to the Next Level

So I take it you were scrolling down Insta, browsing Youtube and you happened to come across some flawless Beauty Guru and that got you thinking, “Hm what VSCO filter is that?”

Nah JK that’s not it.

But in all seriousness makeup can be an Olympic sport what with razor sharp winged liner, cut creases and brows that slay. Not to worry my tips will have you in tip top shape in no time! Plus I’ve included a downloadable Eyeshadow 101 freebie! Sign up to have access to it.

1. PREP AND PRIME YOUR SKIN

Alright, so you’ve followed through with your skincare routine; cleanser – toner – moisturizer (spf too!). Now to prime your clean and hydrated skin use a light, silicone free (silicone clogs pores) primer perfect for prepping your skin before you lay your foundation.

2. IT’S ALL IN THE ROUTINE

There’s no right or wrong, but there is an easier way of getting things done.

Let’s start with foundationconcealer thereafter and powder to set everything in place. Then add warmth either with blush on your cheekbones or bronzer along the hollows of your cheeks. Highlighter to highlight the highest points of your face.

Eyes are next, starting off with your browsshadow and then lashes. Finish off with lips and finishing spray to lock it all in.

3. BLEND UNTIL YOUR HANDS FALL OFF

Blending is the make or break of any makeup look. It’ll either have you looking like a 3 year old who broke into their moms vanity or a beat, bronzed Goddess who knows whats she’s doing!

  • Make sure to blend your foundation all the way down to your neck. This way it doesn’t look like a mask on your skin, rather a flawless more perfect version of your skin.
  • Gradually build up your eyeshadow by going in with a little shadow to start with, blending this way allows for a seamless finish.

4. USE MAKEUP TO ENHANCE YOUR FEATURES INSTEAD OF ERASING THEM

What I absolutely love about makeup is the ability to bring out my features that are naturally playing hide ‘n seek.

Bring these gems out by concealing dark under eye circles and covering up blemishes. Use a lighter shade to highlight high points of your face, such as the forehead and bridge of the nose.

Carve and sculpt your cheekbones with a contour shade twice as dark as your regular foundation shade. Most importantly have fun with it! Don’t be afraid to play around with colours and looks either.

5. FRESHEN UP ON THE GO!

It gets hot, I start getting sweaty and depending on my makeup that stuff starts running marathons I haven’t trained for! That or I just look like a grease ball.

I always keep some oil blotting sheets in my purse instead of reapplying, that’ll just clog up my pores and have me looking cakey.

Using a light powder does the trick too, or just go in with a matifying foundation to begin with.

6. USE BRUSHES INSTEAD OF FINGERS

Okay, I know that all of them kinda look the same, and some of them are more expensive than lunch at McDonalds. But, hey, they serve a purpose. Let’s take a look at some essential brushes:

  • Stippling Brush: Perfect for blending cream products; like foundation, concealer or contour creams
  • Powder Brush: Used to set the face with powder, apply blush or bronzer. Can be used to tap off excess powder or eyeshadow fallout.
  • Blending Brush: Great for blending eyeshadow shades and applying eyeshadow.

Keep these babies clean to ensure fewer breakouts.

7. SAVE, SAVE, SAVE!

So here’s the tea; so many of those high end companies produce drugstore products as well, they’re all manufactured by the same corporations. There’s no need to blow your entire salary on a palette or foundation (unless you want to).

But in all serousness the drugstore has some great products for less. Perhaps you could even splurge on a palette and save on the essentials like, mascara.

Use those coupon codes Beauty Gurus are always dumping on you! Especially on bigger orders.

8. AHH NOW TO TAKE IT ALL OFF

Removing it is as crucial as blending it. Face wipes are great for removing the base of your makeup but the eyes need something a little more gentle.

Perhaps use a specific product for removing eye makeup or coconut oil.

Take your time making sure you’ve removed all traces of makeup so your skin can finally breath!

9. IF IT’S EXPIRED THEN ITS GOTTA GO!

Okay, okay I’m guilty of this too. I’ve kept things for way and I mean waaay past the expiration date, purely because I paid for it and I wanted to get my monies worth.

But all that’s going to do is take up space and clog my pores. So say sayonara to that two year old clumpy mascara that smells funky!

Perfect excuse to get another mascara, see you don’t have a shopping problem you’re just responsible!

I hope these tips make your makeup journey a lot easier!

Love Valx.
